The Juggernaut Method: how progression works
Learn how the Juggernaut Method uses training waves, realization sets, and a Working Max to progress a lift.
The basic idea
Chad Wesley Smith created the Juggernaut Method as a long-term strength program built around the squat, bench press, deadlift, and military press (overhead press).
Each lift moves through four waves: 10s, 8s, 5s, and 3s. A wave starts with higher-volume work, builds to a realization week with an AMRAP set, then finishes with a deload. The later waves use fewer reps and heavier percentages.
Your reps in the realization set determine how your Working Max changes for the next wave. This ties the increase to your performance across the full wave instead of one workout.
The complete method also programs assistance work and conditioning. Its wave-based progression is one part of the wider system.
Who benefits from the Juggernaut Method
The method becomes useful after beginner progression has run its course. Intermediate and advanced lifters often need more training and recovery between meaningful load increases. The Juggernaut Method provides that time through planned blocks instead of asking you to add weight every session.
The 10s and 8s waves provide high-volume practice with manageable weights. That work can build muscle, improve work capacity, and give you more chances to refine your technique. The 5s and 3s waves then shift the same lifts toward heavier strength work.
The method also suits lifters who want their progress to reflect performance. The realization set ties the next WM increase to your extra reps. A strong result earns a larger increase, while hitting the wave target keeps the WM steady.
You need a stable set of main lifts and enough time to complete the cycle. Running the 10s, 8s, 5s, and 3s waves takes 16 weeks when each wave includes its deload. The squat, bench press, deadlift, and overhead press fit this structure because you can practise them for months and measure progress against the same movements.
Use linear progression while it continues to produce reliable session-to-session increases. Consider the Juggernaut Method when progress needs more volume, more recovery, and a longer cycle.
Start with a conservative Working Max
Chad Wesley Smith calls this number a Working Max, shortened here to WM. It gives the percentages a conservative starting point below your true maximum.
Your WM is a conservative reference for calculating training weights. A common starting point is 90% of a recent true or estimated 1RM. Starting below your best lift gives you room to complete the planned volume and improve across several waves.
If your recent squat 1RM is 160 kg, a 90% WM is 144 kg. A set prescribed at 70% uses 100.8 kg before you round it to a weight you can load.
Common starting WM = current true or estimated 1RM × 90%
Example: 160 kg × 90% = 144 kg WM
Four waves move from 10 reps to 3
The number in each wave tells you its main rep target. The 10s wave starts with lighter, higher-rep work. The 8s, 5s, and 3s waves raise the percentage as the rep target drops.
Each wave runs through accumulation, intensification, realization, and deload phases. Keep those weeks in order because each one prepares you for the next part of the wave.
The percentages in the table show the realization set for each wave. Earlier weeks use lower percentages and more volume to prepare you for that set.
Accumulation
You build volume with a manageable percentage and practise the wave's rep target.
Intensification
You raise the percentage and perform fewer work sets before the realization week.
Realization
You finish with an AMRAP set. The result helps calculate your WM for the next wave.
Deload
You reduce the work and recover before starting the next wave.
AMRAP means as many reps as possible. Stop when you cannot complete another rep with acceptable technique. Log only the reps you completed.
An 8s wave example
Suppose your squat WM is 140 kg and you have reached the realization week of the 8s wave. The realization set uses 80% of your WM, which gives you 112 kg before rounding.
You complete 11 reps. The wave target is 8, so you performed 3 extra reps. Multiply those extra reps by your chosen increment, then add the result to your current WM.
New WM = current WM +
(completed reps − wave target) × increment per rep
Example: finishing the 8s wave
In this example, three extra reps add 7.5 kg to the next WM. A smaller increment produces a smaller change from the same set, so choose an increment you can sustain across future waves.
Chad's published example adds 2.5 lb per extra rep for the bench press and 5 lb per extra rep for the squat. After conversion, those amounts align with 1.25 kg for upper-body lifts and 2.5 kg for lower-body lifts.
Use the smaller increments while building your strength base. Lifters with larger maxes should use 2.5 kg per extra rep on the bench press and overhead press, and 5 kg per extra rep on the squat and deadlift. The larger jump stays proportionate when the lift itself is much heavier.
Hitting the wave target leaves the WM unchanged in this formula. Extra reps raise it. If you complete fewer reps than the target, the original Juggernaut Method has you repeat that wave before moving on.
Round each prescribed load to weight you can put on the bar after applying the percentage to your WM.
Using Juggernaut progression in Dynamic Program
Dynamic Program lets you use JTS as the progression method for a selected lift in a week-based plan. The app calls the reference number a Training Max, or TM, because 5/3/1 uses the same name. For JTS progression, the TM field holds the same value Chad calls a Working Max, or WM.
Start with the four main lifts used in the method: the squat, bench press, deadlift, and overhead press. You can use a close variation when you plan to keep it for the whole cycle, but changing the exercise midway makes its percentages and rep results harder to compare.
Keep JTS progression for the main lifts. Use linear progression or double linear progression for curls, lateral raises, triceps work, and other isolation exercises.
When you miss the realization target
Dynamic Program continues to the next wave when you miss the rep target on a realization AMRAP. The original method has you repeat the wave.
This keeps the plan moving. Repeating a wave for one lift while the other lifts continue would put them on different schedules and make a fixed week-based plan harder to follow and manage.
After you complete the full 16-week cycle, review the TM for each lift. Lower or recalculate a TM when the realization results show that it has become too high before starting the next cycle.
